What does Plug In SEO automate — and what do I need to do manually?

Written by Florencia Arena

Plug In SEO automatically applies meta templates and structured data to your store. When it detects SEO issues, those fixes are made by you in Shopify. This article explains exactly what the app handles and what you need to do yourself.

What the app does automatically

Once set up, the following runs without any extra steps from you:

  • Meta title and description templates — The app comes with a recommended template already active (e.g. Product Name – Store Name). It applies to every product, collection, and page on your store from day one — you don't need to set anything up. If you want a different format, you can customise it in the Titles & Descriptions section.

  • Schema markup (structured data) — Organization, WebSite, and Product schema are added to your store automatically. This helps Google display richer search results for your pages.

  • Broken link detection — The app tracks every 404 error on your store in the background. You'll see them in the Broken Links screen whenever you check.

  • Keyword research — In the Keyword Studio, you can run automatic keyword research per page using the magic wand. This pulls from Google Search Console and the web. Available based on your plan quota.

What you need to set up once

  • Enable app embeds — After installing, you need to enable the Plug In SEO app embeds in your Shopify Theme Editor. Until you do this, none of the app's optimisations are live on your store. How to enable app embeds →

  • Schema: logo and social profiles — The app adds the schema code automatically, but you need to enter your store logo and social profile links (Instagram, Facebook, etc.) in the Schema section. Without these, the structured data will be missing key fields that Google looks for.

  • Google Search Console connection — You need to connect GSC once to unlock keyword rankings, CTR data, and the magic wand keyword research tool.

What the app finds — but you fix manually

The SEO Scanner detects issues across your store. All issues it finds require manual fixes in Shopify — the app tells you what's wrong and where, but does not make the changes itself. Examples include:

  • Duplicate meta tags — flagged by the scanner, removed manually in Shopify or your theme

  • Missing or incorrect H1/H2 headings — fixed in the Shopify product description editor

  • Image alt text — added manually on each product image in Shopify

  • Image file names — renamed manually before re-uploading in Shopify Media

  • Content gaps and keyword issues — keywords not present in titles, descriptions, or alt text; fixed page by page

  • Homepage issues — flagged but not editable by the app; fixed in your Shopify theme editor

As a rule: if the scanner flagged it, you're the one fixing it.

What Plug In SEO doesn't do

  • Bulk AI content generation — Rewriting product titles, descriptions, or alt text in bulk with AI is a feature of Plug In AI, not Plug In SEO.

  • Internal linking — The app does not suggest or create internal links between pages.
