Who this article is for: People who have a multi-lingual shop and new to Plug in SEO and Langify or need a refresher. What you'll learn: You'll gain a better understanding of how to use Langify for your Shopify store. |
With Plug in SEO and Langify installed, your shop will be fully optimised for multilingual SEO. We've worked hard to make sure both apps are compatible and you don't lose any features.
Your default language will work the same in Plug in SEO, with the SEO data for additional languages translated in Langify.
Plug in SEO will also take advantage of your Langify setup to generate the correct multilingual markup recommended by search engines.
Go through these steps to set everything up for multilingual SEO:
1. Enable the Langify domain feature
This will make each of your languages be treated as a separate site by search engines, ranking each for its language keywords.
*See how to set up the Langify domain feature
2. Enable Langify search engine translation feature
You can override the default page titles and meta descriptions for products, collections, pages, blogs and blog posts by entering a translation in Langify. Plug in SEO Plus will respect this and use it.
In Langify, go to Theme Settings. Press 'Enable' in Search Engine Translations if it isn't already enabled.
3. Translate special page titles
In Langify, go to Theme Translations (select your main theme snippets/pluginseo-page-title.liquid
Here you'll see [Homepage page title], [404 page title] and [Search page title]. Enter translations for each of these.
4. Translate the page title and append
Still in Theme Translations (select your main theme snippets/pluginseo-page-title.liquid, you'll see [Append]. This is added to short page titles to take full advantage of the space available for SEO.
Translate this, adding a separator like '|' if you wish. For example, if the short page title is 'Jumpers', an append of ' | Woolen Winter Wear' makes the final page title 'Jumpers | Woolen Winter Wear'.
5. Translate special meta descriptions
In Langify, go to Custom. Here you'll add meta descriptions for each special page.
5.1. Press 'Add new custom content'. In 'Text' enter exactly:
[Homepage meta description]
5.2. Press 'Create'.
5.3. Once created, press the '[Homepage meta description]' custom content to translate it. Enter your translations and press Save.
Repeat steps 5.1-5.3 for:
[404 meta description]
[Search meta description]
6. Enable hreflang support
Plug in SEO Plus generates the correct hreflang tags for you. These are used by search engines to find different language versions of the same page.
*Read how Google recommends using hreflang.
All you need to do to enable this is to make sure each language in Langify has a domain entered and the correct language code selected.
In Langify, go to Languages. Check that your base language and all other languages have a 'Domain' and 'Code' specified. If any don't, just select the language and enter both.
7. Check your base language is your default language
For the correct language to be used in SEO your base language in Langify should be your default language.
In Langify, go to Languages. Check that your base language is your default language. If it isn't, press 'set as default'.
8. Publish these translations
When you've completed the preceeding steps you may have to publish the translations from within Langify to your current 'main' theme as shown in Langify.
You're all set up for multilingual SEO using Plug in SEO and Langify. If you get stuck, drop us an email here at Plug in SEO or get in touch with Langify.
