Best Practices for Page Headings and Subheadings
We recommend taking the following pointers into consideration when writing your page heading:
- Each page should have one (and only one) H1 heading.
- Each page should have at least one (several is better) H2 or H3 subheadings.
- In each heading and subheading include 2 or 3 keywords
- The URL slug (the page name in the address bar) should use the same words as the H1 page heading
- Keep the heading or subheading pithy - short and to the point - this will help your readers find the information they need more efficiently.
- Your H1 heading should contain only text - if there is a link or an image inside of your H1 tags you'll receive a warning from the SEO Shop Scanner.
Example: In this webpage you're reading now, notice that our H1 Heading contains 2 strong keyword phrases: How to Fix Shopify SEO and Shopify SEO problems. Below the H1 heading at the top of the page each subsection has it's own subheading using H2 or H3 subheadings. |

No H1 Heading Found or H1 Heading Contains No Content
If you are seeing an issue indicating that there is no H1 found or that the H1 tag contains no content you'll want to look at the settings in your theme. Every Shopify theme is different so we won't be able to provide detailed step-by-step instructions on how to fix this in your exact situation. However, every good theme should provide you with a way to control the content, placement, and heading type on your pages.
No Keyword Found or Only One Keyword Found
If you're seeing the following warning: No Keyword Found or Only One Keyword Found, there are two ways to fix these problems:
1. Update your Heading to include 2-3 of the active keywords in the Keyword Studio, or
2. Add the words from your heading as keywords in the Keyword Studio.

Multiple H1 Headings Found
If you receive the warning that there is more than one H1 on a page, then you may have added text formatted as H1 to your page, or perhaps you captioned an image with H1 heading text.
Here is how to change the formatting of on-page text:
It’s important to break up the text on a page with sub-headings. It makes the page easier to read. But you should only use the H1 heading one time as the title of the page. For subheadings its best to use H2 and H3 headings.
In all cases use powerful keywords in your headings and subheadings. Search engines look at headings (H1, H2, H3) in order before looking at paragraph text.
No Subheadings Found and Only One Subheading Found (<H2> Or <H3>)
If you receive the warning that there is only one subheading found, or if there are no subheadings found, you'll want to take the opportunity to try to enhance your content.
If you follow the best practices above, you'll have an advantage in search engine results pages (SERPs). Use several subheadings that include good keywords in your product descriptions, collections content, and your blog posts.
