Who this article is for: Plug In Speed users who have uninstalled or turned off the app and can still see Plug In Speed code in their theme files.
What you'll learn: How to find every change Plug In Speed made, revert each file to its original version, and delete the leftover snippet and asset files.
Prefer not to do this yourself? Email [email protected] and we'll clean it up for you at no charge. We'll request a collaborator account, you approve it, and we do the rest.
Why this clean-up is needed
When you uninstall an app, Shopify cuts off its access to your store instantly. That means we can't remove our code from your theme afterwards, even though we'd like to. Whatever was in place at the moment you uninstalled stays there.
If the app is still installed, there's a cleaner way: open Plug In Speed > Settings (the cog icon in the top right), turn off all code optimizations, and wait for the confirmation email before you remove the app. See Uninstall Plug in Speed for the full order of steps. The guide below is for when the app is already gone.
Before you start
Duplicate your theme first. Go to Online Store > Themes, click the three dots (…) next to your theme and choose Duplicate. You'll be editing theme code, and a copy means you can always go back to where you started.
Step 1: Open the theme code editor
In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
Next to your active theme — or whichever theme you want to clean — click the three dots (…) and select Edit code.
Step 2: Find the Plug In Speed changes
Click the search (magnifying glass) icon in the top left of the code editor.
Search for comment pluginspeed. That's the marker we put around every section we modify, so it finds all of them at once.
The results list every file we touched. Click the first one to open it in the editor.
Step 3: Revert a file to its original version
Click the Explorer icon, directly above the search icon, to open the file tree. At the bottom of that sidebar you'll find a Timeline section.
Under Timeline, click the revision above the current one — Original, Version 2, Version 3 and so on. The editor opens a side-by-side comparison so you can see exactly what was added.
In the top right of the editor pane, click Revert contents (the arrow pointing right) to restore the original file.
Save the file with Ctrl + S (Windows) or Cmd + S (Mac).
Step 4: Repeat for the remaining files
Go back to the search panel and open the next file in the results.
Repeat the same three actions — select the previous revision, click Revert contents, save — until no results remain for comment pluginspeed.
Then search for "pluginspeed" and 'pluginspeed' as well, to catch any inline reference that isn't wrapped in the comment marker.
Step 5 (optional): Delete the files we created
Once the references are gone, the files we generated no longer load and won't affect your store's speed. You can delete them if you'd like a completely clean theme.
Press Ctrl + P (Windows) or Cmd + P (Mac) inside the code editor to open the quick file finder.
Type pluginspeed to list every snippet and asset we generated — for example pluginspeed.liquid and pluginspeed.min.base.css.
Open and delete any that are still there.
